Diagnosis and Treatment Options for Pet Parasites

All pet owners should be aware of some of the common signs of intestinal parasites in pets, which include lethargy, loss of appetite, and vomiting. If your pet shows any of these symptoms, or if you have physically seen signs of parasites in your pet's stool, then it's time to schedule a screening with our veterinary clinic. For intestinal parasites, we will require a fecal sample for an accurate diagnosis. Some of the more common intestinal parasites we see in pets include roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.

Fortunately, we can provide treatment for intestinal parasites here in our office. Usually, treatment will involve giving your pet a parasite medication, which will require a follow-up fecal test to ensure that the infestation has been successfully treated. Screenings and treatments for external parasites, such as ticks and fleas, can also be performed in our office.

Protecting Your Pet From Parasites

If your pet is not already on a parasite preventative medication, we highly recommend you speak with our vet about this today. All dogs and cats should be on a monthly preventative medication, especially if they spend any amount of time outdoors. These medications can help protect your pet from a wide range of internal parasites, as well as fleas, ticks, and heartworms.
